Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about maintaining a solar system, and what it actually needs.

Do solar panels need maintenance?

Yes, though less than most people expect. There are no moving parts, so the panels themselves rarely fail. What needs attention is everything around them: the inverter, the isolators, the connectors, the mounting, and the surface of the glass. A system left completely alone for a decade usually still works, but it is often quietly producing less than it should.

How often do solar panels need maintenance?

An annual check suits most domestic systems. More often is worth it where there are overhanging trees, heavy soiling, coastal salt, or a commercial array where lost generation is expensive. If your system has never been inspected and is more than a few years old, that first visit is usually the one that finds something.

Are solar panels maintenance free?

Low maintenance, not maintenance free. The distinction matters because the components with a finite life, principally the inverter, are the ones that decide whether the system keeps earning. Treating solar as fit-and-forget is how a fault sits undetected for a year and quietly costs you a year of output.

What maintenance do solar panels need?

Cleaning where soiling is heavy, a visual inspection for cracked glass, discolouration and lifting panels, electrical checks on the inverter, wiring, fuses and isolators, a check on mounting and fixings, and a comparison of actual output against what the system should be producing. Bird proofing where nesting under the array is a problem.

How much does solar panel maintenance cost?

It depends on the size of the array, access to the roof, and whether you want a one-off inspection or ongoing servicing. We will not quote a figure before we know what we are looking at, because any installer who does is guessing. You get one clear price before any work starts.

Do solar panels need cleaning in the UK?

British rain does a reasonable job on a pitched roof, so many systems never strictly need it. Cleaning earns its keep where panels sit at a shallow pitch, under trees, near a farm or a busy road, or where bird droppings have built up in one spot. Dirt in a concentrated patch matters more than an even film across the whole array.

Does maintenance affect my warranty?

It can support it. Some manufacturers require periodic maintenance to keep a warranty valid, and a documented inspection is evidence the system has been cared for. A check also finds faults while they are still inside a warranty period, which is often the difference between a free part and a paid one.

Do you maintain systems you did not install?

Yes. A large share of the systems we service and repair were fitted by someone else, including installers who have since stopped trading. We do not need to have installed it to inspect it, repair it, and take it on for future servicing.
