A building that needs energy all year

Limes Care Home in Birmingham (B38 8JZ) faced growing challenges with rising utility costs while striving to reduce its environmental impact. As a care facility, its energy demands are constant throughout the year.

Management sought a sustainable solution that would balance financial savings and ecological benefits while reducing dependency on grid energy.

A 79.65 kWp array across three roof sections

Solar4Good developed and implemented a 79.65 kWp system using 177 DMEGC 450W panels with a Fox V50 50kW three-phase string inverter sited in the basement. The array was split across three roof sections — two south-west facing and one south-east — to make the most of the building's multi-orientation design.

Approved under G99 with National Grid on a three-phase connection, the system generates over 70,000 kWh a year. Across its 25-year lifetime it is set to yield more than £270,000 in savings and offset around 400 tonnes of CO₂ — equivalent to driving 2.31 million kilometres.

What the home gained

  • Over £270,000 saved across the system's 25-year lifetime
  • Full return on investment within 5 years
  • Generates 70,139 kWh a year
